Sailing YouTube channels - all aspects of sailing covered

Updated: May 19, 2024

I have started exploring sailing from a distant starting point. I was searching the internet for sailing techniques, physics, boat characteristics and many more. Among the search results I came across to many videos from YouTube.

As I was browsing them, I realised how many couples and families have decided to give up their land life and moved onto a boat and started cruising around the world. Exciting option... but it is clearly not for everyone and not at any random point in time, however it was particularly interesting to follow these video series, as they gave an insight into boat life:

  • how does it look like on the sea?

  • how you prepare yourself and your vessel for a longer voyage?

  • what equipments to install on the boat and why? which product work better for the same purpose?

  • how does the lifestyle look like? What are its daily issues, and how entertaining it is?

  • what kind of technical/mechanical issues come up, and more importantly how do you deal with?

  • how do you manage the weather, the vessel, the tasks for the crew and last but not least the life on the boat?

  • how you trim the sails? what sail and rigging settings work in which conditions?

  • how do you deal with storms?

  • how do you do mooring, anchoring, maintenance, repair?

  • how do you chose marinas?

  • etc.

Long story short, I found them both informative and entertaining. They gave a particular insight into real life sailing experiences, that many can have access to only when living them through themselves. Should you be interested in what makes someone to decide for such a lifestyle, how they make it happen, and how they manage afterwards, please feel free to check out my favourites below:

Sailing Zatara - it was my first sailing channel that I started to follow. They made a bold move in their life at a comparable stage of their life to mine

Sailing LaVagabond - started as a love story of two young Australians in Europe, and turned into something which attracts the largest number of followers on YouTube among the sailing channels

NBJS - Erik Aanderaa - North-Atlantic solo-sailing adventures in remarkable natural environment. And he is truly NBJS - No Bullshit Just Sailing :)

Sailing Sunday - a very likeable couple from Australia, who got into the full time sailing lifestyle very early in their life. They bought their boat in Malta, and sailed around the Mediterranean Sea for a couple of years, before they crossed the Atlantic Ocean. They have their German Shepard on board and they have amazingly likeable inclination to helping animals, particularly cats and dogs!

Sailing SV Delos - a story, which started off with a very thorough gentlemen having enough of his day-to-day corporate life as employee. The rest is already a history with a seemingly much happier life and a fully family on board

Sailing Uma - sailing story of a young couple who tend to do everything with a sympathetic dedication and precision, be it boat works or sailing around the world.
